The debts of the Icelandic National Power Company and the Greenhouse effect!
The debts of the Icelandic National Power Company which is state owned are already considerable following the construction of the gigantic Karahnjukar hydropower dam (which I desperately protested against). Now many engineering addicts and leaders of Icelandic industry are demanding that this same National Power Company invest billions of dollars in new hydropower, geothermal power projects in order to support aluminium smelter projects. In my opinion this gives the word insanity a totally new and deeper meaning!
It is insane in the current situation to talk about increasing debts of companies which are in public ownership in Iceland. Especially if the intention is to build more aluminium smelters.
It is even insane to suggest an increase in debts of companies that are completely privately owned.
And this proposed increase in debt is also completely loony, even if we do not take into account the greenhouse effect, and the fact that global climate is now showing an almost unprecedented warming trend. James E. Hansen, director of the NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies and professor at Columbia, has said that if we go back 3 million years or so, in the Earth´s history, we will find similar temperatures as we are heading for now within this century. During that time 3 million years ago, the ocean level was 25 meters higher than it is today. This puts the huge CO2 emissions from the Icelandic aluminium smelters in a new perspective altogether.
Surely Iceland has enough troubles without also helping to raise global sea level by 25 meters within this century.
In fact the only good thing which may come out of all this, is that the Icelandic National Power Company and the associated lunatics, may no longer afford to build more gigantic dams, or senseless powerplants.
Enough is simply enough!
